Lionel Messi has retired from Argentina’s national soccer team.
In August, Messi confirmed his retirement from international play in an Instagram post showing a handwritten note. In a footnote to the caption, the GOAT wrote, “*I wrote these words on July 21st, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before.” Messi’s father died on Aug. 8 at the age of 68, less than a month after Argentina’s World Cup final appearance against Spain.

The superstar’s 208th and final game was a friendly on Oct. 6 against Benin. Messi scored a penalty kick and provided two assists to lead Argentina to a 3-0 victory. “I would love to keep coming back forever, because playing for the Argentine national team is the most beautiful thing that can happen to you. The most beautiful thing,” said Messi, addressing the crowd after the game.
Messi retires from senior international soccer after 21 years and six World Cups — including a victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Messi’s final game was the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, who beat Argentina 1-0. Messi finished the tournament with eight goals — the second most, behind France’s Kylian Mbappé with 10.
