Left-arm spinner N. Shree Charani equalled the record for the most wickets taken in a calendar year by an Indian in women’s T20Is on Thursday.
She matched Poonam Yadav’s 35-wicket tally which the leg spinner accumulated during the 2018 year in 35 innings. Charani achieved this feat, in 19 innings, during India’s Women’s Asia Cup 2026 semifinal against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.
Interestingly, it was Charani’s 50th T20I wicket as well, which came when she removed Bangladesh’s Juairiya Ferdous.
The 22-year-old from Andhra Pradesh has quickly become a mainstay of this Indian team with her no-nonsense bowling, reiterating her intent to attack the stumps.
She made her international debut last year in April against Sri Lanka after an impressive Women’s Premier League outing with Delhi Capitals. Charani subsequently made the ODI World Cup squad and was part of the group which clinched India’s first-ever 50-over world title
