Marvel Unveils New Matching Avengers Costumes, And They're Literally Perfect

Earth's Mightiest Heroes don matching uniforms to fight their latest crossover villain, something the Avengers have rarely done in their sixty-three-year history. For several Avengers, their appearance is an intrinsic part of their biological or supernatural nature. For example, Thor wears the same royal regalia eons before and eons after his time with the Avengers, and Vision's colorful palette is an intrinsic part of his synthezoid body. Other Avengers craft their costumes as intentional symbols of hope. For instance, Captain America's costume is a WWII relic, and Spider-Man's webbed red-and-blue costume with large white lenses has become a worldwide synonym of heroism, inside and outside the Marvel Universe.

Very rarely, the Avengers decide to wear matching uniforms for specific situations. In the 1990s, Marvel introduced identical leather bomber jackets adorned with the team's logo, which characters like Black Knight, Crystal, and Sersi wore over their traditional superhero attire. Years later, the Fifty-State Initiative introduced combat suits for government-sanctioned hero recruits across the country. In the MCU, Avengers: Endgame covered the team in identical white, red, and slate-gray Quantum suits inspired by Hank Pym's size-shifting Ant-Man technology, built for protection during time travel via the Quantum Realm.

While the Avengers are a coalition of individual champions who assemble for specific crises before they separate into their own worlds, they sometimes become something more than a simple team.

The Avengers, X-Men, And Fantastic Four Wear Matching Gray Costumes

  • The Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four wear matching gray costumes in Queen in Black #5

  • The Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four wear matching gray symbiote costumes in Queen in Black #5

Just as Hela dies and Knull becomes the final opponent to the world, Venom takes over Earth and transforms it into Venomworld. Inside, Earth's entire population becomes one with the symbiote, and the entire superhero community receives a gray-scale version of their costumes. Queen in Black #5 concludes the crossover event with Knull's defeat at the hands of all humanity and the introduction of a brand-new King in Black, but not before the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four debut their most coordinated wardrobe to date. Even the most colorful heroes, like Beta Ray Bill, are clad in gray-and-black uniforms.

Marvel heroes aren't unfamiliar with gray versions of their classic looks. Iron Man debuted in a bulky silver-gray iron suit to escape captivity before adding the classic red-and-gold flair to his tech. Deep into his Spider-Man career, Peter Parker donned the bulky Spider-Armor Mark I, a heavy silver compound costume that protected him against high-caliber firepower from the New Enforcers. Meanwhile, Wolverine wore a gray-and-black uniform alongside Deadpool and Archangel throughout their black-ops tenure on the X-Force squad. Magneto, Black Widow, and Daredevil have also experimented with grayscale, and both Hulk and Vision's bodies have followed suit.

The Avengers' Matching Costumes Never Stick Around

Earth's Mightiest Heroes Are Inherently Diverse In Their Wardrobe

Black Knight, Sersi, Crystal, and other Avengers wear bomber jackets

The Avengers occasionally adopt unified team suits, but their uniforms inevitably fade away. After all, a Norse deity in ancient armor, a World War II supersoldier, and a billionaire in a high-tech suit of armor are a more varied collection of heroes than most mutant teams, which usually have similar origins and similar struggles. The Avengers' individual costumes serve as immediate shorthands for their diverse origins, abilities, and philosophies. Regular uniforms would diminish the majestic presence of each individual member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

The X-Men repeatedly return to their uniforms precisely because their shared identity as a persecuted mutant minority binds them together. From their origins as Charles Xavier’s young students in gold and blue uniforms to their yellow-prominent modern field gear, the X-Men and all other mutant teams' clothes always reflect collective survival. While individual mutants customize their suits over time, the traditional team aesthetic reinforces their status as a huge family. Venomworld's gray makeover injects this sense of unity to the entire planet and all superheroes currently present on Earth, but only temporarily.
