Kogi LG poll: Ododo votes, hails peaceful conduct

Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo casting his vote

The Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has commended the peaceful conduct of the ongoing local government elections in the state. The polls are holding in all 21 local government areas of Kogi State.

The Governor, who spoke shortly after casting his vote at his polling unit in Upogoro, Okene, on Saturday, also praised President Bola Tinubu for providing an enabling environment for democracy to thrive in the country.

“The peaceful peaceful atmosphere surrounding the exercise is a significant departure from the violence and bloodshed that has characterised Local Government elections in the past,” he said.

Ododo expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election, noting that the process had assumed a celebratory atmosphere, comparable to a carnival, rather than the tension, fear and destruction that previously accompanied local government polls in parts of the country.

He said the peaceful conduct of the exercise demonstrated the importance of security in strengthening democracy and giving citizens the confidence to participate in the electoral process without fear.

“In the past, Local Government elections used to be bloody. But we thank Mr President for giving us that confidence and supporting us to provide security for our people. You can see that Local Government elections are now just like a carnival,” the Governor said.

He maintained that the prevailing atmosphere was evidence of the progress made in addressing security challenges, adding that the State Government remained committed to protecting lives and property with the support of the Federal Government.

The Governor also urged Nigerians to appreciate the resources and sacrifices required to sustain security, stressing that the relative peace enjoyed in Kogi State was the outcome of ongoing efforts to confront criminal elements.

According to him, “the confidence with which residents and visitors move around the state reflects the importance of security to economic activities, social interaction and democratic participation.”

Ododo, who said his administration would not be distracted by social media controversies, maintained that his priority was to deliver good governance and ensure the safety and well-being of the people.

He further described the election as peaceful, free and transparent, emphasising that political opposition remained an essential component of democracy but should be accompanied by constructive engagement and a demonstrable commitment to public service.

The Governor challenged opposition parties to present their records of achievement and explain how their political platforms had contributed to the development of the state and the welfare of its people.

He expressed confidence in the All Progressives Congress, crediting the party’s leadership, including Tinubu, for supporting the development and security objectives of Kogi State.

Ododo explained that after casting his vote, he left the electoral process in the hands of election officials, expressing satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere and the conduct of the exercise.

He reiterated his administration’s appreciation to Tinubu for the support extended to the state, describing the peaceful election as an encouraging development for democracy and grassroots governance.

The Governor called for continued cooperation among political stakeholders and residents to sustain the peaceful atmosphere throughout the electoral process, stressing that credible elections and security were essential to democratic progress in Kogi State.
