CBSE makes AI a part of formal teaching, NCERT develops module

NCERT has developed a 20-hour introductory module for Classes IX-XII, which CBSE has earmarked for school-based assessment.

NEW DELHI: From spotting deepfake to questioning a chatbot’s confident but incorrect answers, artificial intelligence (AI) is moving from being an optional subject towards becoming a basic skill for CBSE schoolchildren.

Taking a step towards more formal AI teaching in schools, NCERT has developed a 20-hour introductory module for Classes IX-XII, which it has earmarked for school-based assessment. Separate AI textbooks are also being prepared for students pursuing the subject at a more advanced level. The move is part of a wider effort to make AI literacy accessible to students, irrespective of whether they study computers or choose AI as an elective.

The idea is to first familiarise children with how the technology works, its uses and limitations, before moving towards more structured teaching through textbooks.NCERT developed the module on computational thinking (CT) and AI in consultation with IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur.

In an April-9 circular, CBSE had announced that NCERT would provide modules for Classes IX-XII for internal assessment during the 2026-27 academic session.

Under the board’s revised scheme, CT and AI modules are compulsory for Class IX, while Class X continues under the existing scheme.A senior education ministry official said AI had become an important part of everyday activities, from education and research to content writing and career guidance. “AI tools are being used for studies, research, content writing and even career advice. Students will be taught how to use AI tools correctly and fact-check information,” they said.
