Mirabai Chanu, fresh off winning her third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal, will lead India’s four-member weightlifting contingent at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya between September 19 and October 4.
Mirabai has tasted success at CWG and the Olympics but she is yet to win a medal at the Asian Games after two appearances in 2014 and 2023.
In the previous edition in Hangzhou, the 32-year-old finished fourth in the women’s 49kg event after a hip injury in her final attempt in clean and jerk cost her a place on the podium.
Along with Mirabai, CWG silver medallists Gyaneshwari Yadav and Harjinder Kaur will also take part at the Asiad.
In the men’s competition, Rishikanta Singh, who also won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, was supposed to be India’s sole representative but he had to withdraw at the last minute due to an injury.
India, which sent only Mirabai and Bindyarani Devi at the 2022 Asian Games, returned without any medals in weightlifting.
