Indonesia taps sports industry to boost economic growth: Ministry

Translate

The Ministry of Youth and Sports highlighted continued efforts to boost Indonesia's sports industry and support economic growth during the first two years of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's administration.

"Our sports industry continues to gain momentum and make progress. We are now seeing a growing number of sporting events that generate spillover effects across various sectors of the economy," said Teuku Arlan Perkasa Lukman, the ministry's deputy for sports industry development.

He noted that regions across the country have increasingly seized opportunities to host spectator sporting events, including football, tennis, volleyball, and basketball competitions.

Such events, he added, provide wider economic benefits by boosting sectors such as transportation, food services, and accommodation through increased visitor and spectator spending and mobility.

Lukman also emphasized the positive impact of sporting events on the broadcasting industry.

He stressed that the government's support extends to mass-participation sporting events, citing annual races such as the Maybank Marathon in Bali, the Bank Jateng Borobudur Marathon in Central Java, and the BTN Jakarta International Marathon in Jakarta.

According to Lukman, such events can create strategic momentum for driving economic activity across multiple sectors through large-scale public participation, noting that runners tend to spend on sportswear and other gear in preparation for the events.

"Not to mention participants from outside the region who spend on accommodation, transportation, food and beverages, and other necessities," the official added.

He also highlighted the Indonesia Sports Summit (ISS) and the Merdeka Run among the ministry's flagship programs under the Prabowo-Gibran administration.

"These two events are part of our quick-win programs aimed at accelerating the growth of the sports industry," he said.

He reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to supporting more sporting events as part of broader efforts to stimulate economic activity and improve public welfare.
