The Mummy is arguably a timeless 90s adventure classic. The movie tells a fun, fast-paced fantasy story set in Egypt, and it has so many elements that elevate it into something truly special. Brendan Fraser stars as Rick O'Connell alongside Rachel Weisz as Evelyn. She frees O'Connell from prison on the condition that he take her to Hamunaptra, a fabled, mysterious city in the desert.

The pair journey across the sands with Evelyn's brother, Jonathan (John Hannah), along for the ride. They unwittingly awaken an ancient, cursed mummy, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), and must try to stop him before it's too late. One of The Mummy's big selling points is its incredible cast. Fraser and Weisz have phenomenal on-screen chemistry, and we see that spark in the 1999 movie and The Mummy Returns.

The Mummy also cemented Fraser as an action star of the era. O'Connell is rugged and charming, and quickly became one of Fraser's most beloved characters. Another reason The Mummy franchise is so adored is because of its masterful blend of genres. It's absolutely an adventure movie at its core, but it's also funny. Many find Ancient Egypt fascinating, and the original film even delves into light horror with several punchy jump scares.

The Mummy is a tough act to follow, though there are several great movies to watch if you cannot wait for The Mummy 4. For many fans, though, nothing can compare to the originals, and only a rewatch will suffice. Fortunately for those audiences, the original The Mummy trilogy is currently available to stream for free.

The Mummy Movies Are (Mostly) Still Worth Watching Today

The Mummy trilogy is now available to stream on Tubi. It's an ad-supported streaming service, but viewers don't need a subscription to watch movies on the platform. There is also no paid option to remove those ads.

We've already covered why the original The Mummy is so beloved and retains a massive fanbase today. It remains a classic more than two decades later and still holds up remarkably well. Many fans would agree that the 1999 movie is the best in the trilogy, though 2001's The Mummy Returns marks a triumphant return for much of the original cast. Fraser and Evelyn are still incredible together on screen, and the title offers a fantasy adventure in a similar vein to the original, albeit with more exotic locations.

The final movie of the trilogy, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was released in 2008 and is also available to watch on Tubi. Fraser reprised his role as Rick O'Connell, though Weisz did not return to play Evelyn. Instead, Mario Bello took up the mantle with her own take on the beloved character. As the name implies, Imhotep is no longer the main villain in the 3rd movie, with Jet Li playing the fearsome Dragon Emperor.

Weisz's absence in the latest movie is particularly jarring if you watch the trilogy back-to-back. Still, the title does have merit, even as more of a curiosity than an adventure you'll want to revisit time and again.

What To Expect From The Mummy 4

The Mummy 4 is scheduled to release on October 15, 2027, marking the first new movie in the franchise in almost 20 years. Much about the movie, including the plot, remains shrouded in mystery. We also don't know if the story features Imhotep again or an entirely new threat.

However, one major draw for fans of the originals is that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reprising their roles as Rick and Evelyn O'Connell. Time will tell if they retain the same infectious on-screen chemistry as before, but many fans are already elated at the thought of seeing them together again. Hannah is also confirmed to play Johnathan again, and Oded Fehr returns as the Medjai warrior Ardeth Bay.

Fraser is also reportedly getting back into shape for the role. Rick O'Connell is a more athletic character compared to his roles in The Whale and Pressure, for example, so the physical training makes sense. Fraser has also confirmed that filming for The Mummy 4 is starting this month.

It's too early to theorize what the new The Mummy movie could be about, but the returning cast is a huge positive. Michael Johnston from Obsession and Young Sherlock's Numan Acar are also confirmed to feature in the upcoming film, though we don't yet know who they will play.
