Ali Rustam’s son takes on Melaka PKR Youth chief in Ayer Molek

Melaka governor Ali Rustam’s son, Ridhwan Ali, is contesting the Ayer Molek seat for Barisan Nasional in the Nov 14 state election.
The Hang Tuah Jaya Umno chairman faces a straight fight against Melaka PKR Youth chief Hakimin Mokhtar as the BN candidate seeks to retain the Umno stronghold.
Ali, a former Umno vice-president, was chief minister of Melaka from 1999 to 2013, and has been serving as governor since 2020.
He was also Ayer Molek assemblyman for a term from 1986 to 1990.
The Umno stronghold is a Malay-majority seat where the community makes up 87.4% of the electorate, followed by Chinese (7.2%) and Indian (4.4%) voters.
In the 2021 state polls, Umno’s Rahmad Mariman defended the seat for BN with a 2,802-vote majority. Rahmad was dropped as a candidate in this state election.
