Series Based on Rick Riordan’s ‘Kane Chronicles’ in the Works at Disney+

Disney+ is doubling down on the mythological worlds of Rick Riordan.

The streamer and 20th Television are developing a series based on Riordan’s Kane Chronicles book trilogy. Riordan and Angela Robinson (True Blood, D.E.B.S.) are teaming to adapt the books.

Should it go to series, Kane Chronicles — about a brother and sister who are descended from Egyptian pharaohs and who use magic — would join Percy Jackson and the Olympians, also based on books by Riordan, on Disney+. Percy Jackson’s third season is set to premiere in November.

Disney+ is the second streamer to take a run at The Kane Chronicles. In 2020, Riordan announced that Netflix was developing feature films based on the three books. The project languished in development for several years, however, and was ultimately scrapped in 2024.

The first Kane Chronicles book, The Red Pyramid, was published in 2010 and was followed by The Throne of Fire and The Serpent’s Shadow. Three short stories also serve as crossovers between the books’ lead characters, siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, and those in the Percy Jackson books.

The logline for Kane Chronicles reads, “When their father unleashes the god of chaos and vanishes, the estranged Kane siblings must master their inherited Egyptian magic, forge unlikely alliances, and rescue their father before warring gods can wreak havoc on our modern world.”

Robinson has also worked as a writer and producer on The L Word and How to Get Away With Murder, among other shows and directed episodes of Wednesday, The L Word and True Blood. She also wrote and directed the 2017 feature Professor Marston & the Wonder Women.

Riordan and Robinson are executive producing Kane Chronicles with Rebecca Riordan and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell of The Gotham Group.
