Several homes in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, were damaged when high-velocity winds swept through the area, but the City of Cape Town was unable to confirm reports of a tornado.

The City of Cape Town could not confirm reports of a tornado after severe weather on Tuesday morning damaged several homes in Mitchells Plain.

Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson Charlotte Powell said its emergency services officials were on the scene in Tafelsig, where high-velocity winds damaged properties.

“The extent of the damage is unclear. Assessments have yet to be completed. No injuries have been reported to our Disaster Operations Centre,” she said.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) said forecasters were still assessing whether the tornado reports were valid.

Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said that the damage occurred in Maanskynkop Street at around 04:30 on Tuesday.

He said crews were dispatched to the scene.

The roofs of several homes in Mitchells Plain were blown off amid severe weather on Tuesday morning.

“Upon arrival, crews found that several houses had sustained damage, with roofs having been blown off. At this stage, it is estimated that approximately 50 structures in and around Maanskynkop Street have been affected,” he added.

“One adult female was treated on scene for shock but declined transportation to hospital. Emergency personnel remain on scene to monitor the situation.”
