'We don't audition outsiders and newcomers': Ayushmann Khurrana about an early rejection story involving Karan Johar

Ayushmann Khurrana, who recently appeared in 'Udta Teer', once recalled an early encounter with filmmaker Karan Johar that did not unfold as he had expected. Before becoming a recognised Bollywood actor, Ayushmann worked as a radio jockey and sought opportunities to enter the film industry. During an appearance on the chat show 'Koffee With Karan', he narrated how a conversation with Karan Johar in 2007 led to an unexpected response when he tried to contact the filmmaker.

Ayushmann Khurrana approached Karan Johar in 2007

The incident took place at an awards ceremony when Ayushmann Khurrana was working as an RJ. He met Karan Johar, who was among the first celebrities he had interviewed. Hoping to pursue his acting ambitions, Ayushmann asked the filmmaker for his contact number. The actor later recalled that he received a landline number and decided to call the following morning. However, the response he received left him disappointed.

The person who answered reportedly told him that the production house did not audition outsiders and newcomers.Recounting the conversation on 'Koffee With Karan', Ayushmann said, "I was like, 'Can I have your number? I want to be an actor. You gave me a landline number. The next morning, when I called the number and asked to speak to Karan Johar, the person on the other line said, 'We don't audition outsiders and newcomers' or something like that."

The experience became a memorable part of Ayushmann's early attempts to establish himself in the entertainment industry.

Karan Johar's response to the anecdote

Karan Johar offered his own interpretation of the incident during the conversation. Responding to Ayushmann's recollection, the filmmaker said, "I gave you the right number. That was very sweet of me! I must've thought that you have potential".Ayushmann, however, pointed out that the exchange had not helped him reach the filmmaker personally.

Karan then asked why the actor had not spoken about the experience earlier.Explaining his approach to public conversations, Ayushmann said he had to be careful about what he shared. He added, "When I was an RJ, I could be myself completely and freely say whatever was on my mind," he added.
