Press swarm Kajang Prison and Langgak Duta after Najib’s pardon news

KAJANG, Sept 18 — Kajang Prison and the residence of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak have become focal points for local and international media following the announcement that he has been granted a conditional pardon by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today.

A Bernama survey found that Malaysian Prison Department personnel had set up a blockade along the access road to the prison’s main entrance to control movement into and out of the complex.

Media personnel gathered outside the prison were restricted to a waiting area about 10 metres from the main gate.

As of 12.30 pm, there was no movement involving the former prime minister detected at the Kajang Prison entrance.

Meanwhile, Najib’s residence on Jalan Langgak Duta in the capital attracted more than 50 local and international media personnel after news of the conditional pardon was announced.

Several police vehicles were also seen at the location.

Earlier, Bernama reported that the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department announced that Sultan Ibrahim had granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine.

In a statement, BHEUU said the decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara today.

Najib, 73, has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022. — Bernama
