Nga Kor Ming says Malaysia’s ethnic and cultural diversity must be preserved

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 19 — Malaysia’s ethnic and cultural diversity is a national strength that needs to be protected to maintain a harmonious, inclusive and progressive society, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming says.

He said the spirit of unity in diversity should remain a driving force for Malaysians, including staff of the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), to work together in developing the country.

“Malaysians should regard our differences as something we can celebrate together and work towards a shared vision to continue developing and improving the wellbeing of our beloved multiracial nation,” he said.

Speaking at the launch of Semarak Jiwa Merdeka @ KPKT to mark National Month here today, Nga said the independence Malaysians enjoy today had come at a cost, built on the unity, sacrifices and hard work of the nation’s people.

He likened Malaysia to an orchestra that can create a harmonious symphony when people from different ethnic and social backgrounds work towards the same vision.

“If one instrument is played louder than the others, it cannot create a beautiful melody and instead produces discordant sounds. But when all the instruments play in harmony, they can produce a truly harmonious orchestral symphony,” he said.

He said the spirit of unity should continue to be strengthened in society, particularly as Malaysia celebrates 69 years of independence and advances as a modern nation.

“We have world-class infrastructure, technology linking every part of the country, and significantly greater economic and educational opportunities.

“However, greater development also brings greater responsibility to preserve the foundations of an inclusive, strong and progressive nation, particularly unity and harmony. These are values we must uphold and protect for generations to come,” he said.

In the context of KPKT, Nga said ministry personnel should work as one team, supporting and complementing one another to help build a sustainable, inclusive and strong Malaysia Madani.

He reminded KPKT personnel not to let public perceptions affect their performance and efforts to deliver services to the people.

“Do not let perceptions overshadow performance. We must ensure that the good work and sacrifices made by KPKT staff are felt and seen by the public,” he said. — Bernama
