WEATHER: Gauteng set for dramatic weather change as cold returns

Translate

Gauteng residents should brace themselves for a return to cold and wet weather conditions later this week.

After a warmer start to September, temperatures are expected to drop significantly from Thursday, with some parts of the province recording daytime highs in the high teens.

A cut-off low-pressure system is currently bringing severe weather conditions to parts of the Northern and Western Cape, with disruptive rain, strong winds and hail among the possible impacts.

According to the South African Weather Service, the system is expected to move towards Gauteng later this week, bringing a noticeable change in weather conditions from Thursday onwards.

For Johannesburg, rain is expected on Monday, with temperatures reaching a high of 23°C. The city is then expected to experience mostly warm and sunny conditions for much of the week before the weather turns colder from Thursday.

Rain and colder temperatures are expected to dominate Gauteng from Friday, with daytime temperatures dropping to around 18°C and 19°C in several areas.

The chilly conditions are expected to continue into the weekend, meaning residents may need to bring out their warmer clothes once again.

Gauteng weather update

Spring may have officially sprung, but the cold weather has clearly not disappeared just yet.

September began with a cold front before temperatures gradually warmed up as the month progressed. However, the latest weather outlook suggests that another spell of chilly conditions is on the way across parts of the country.

While Gauteng has not experienced significant heavy rainfall recently, the province has seen conditions ranging from cool to warm. The arrival of the cut-off low could bring a much-needed change, along with wet and potentially disruptive weather.
