Frosinone’s win over Como seen as ‘good sign for Italian football’

Mike Grella sees Frosinone’s 2-0 win over Como as a ‘good sign for Italian football’ after the Ciociari fielded seven Italian players on Sunday.

Frosinone beat Como 2-0 at the Stadio Stirpe on Sunday, giving Cesc Fabregas’ side their first defeat this season.

Frosinone have lost only one game in Serie A so far, the first against Juventus, and are unbeaten in their last four, with three wins and one draw.

Frosinone started seven Italian players vs. Como

Frosinone coach Massimiliano Alvini fielded seven Italian players, while Como had none in their XI.

“Fabregas said we’d love to sign some Italians but we can’t find them. Well, they’re all at Frosinone, who just beat you 2-0,” Grella said during the CBS Sports Golazo Show on Sunday.

“It’s a good sign for Italian football because there are young players who are willing to play and ran over this Como side. They did a really good job. If you watch the celebrations after the game, it will tell you a lot about why they were able to win the game, because they had a lot of structure. They put a lot into the game.

“For them to win 2-0 is probably a surprise for people who don’t watch every single weekend, but not a surprise when you look at who the manager is and some of the young talents they have. A lot of young players as well.”

Edoardo Goldaniga and Mauro Vigorito were the only Italian players in the Como team last season, while this summer, they’ve signed Moise Kean, Mattia Liberali and Samuele Ricci.

Frosinone coach Alvini, 56, had never won a Serie A match in the dugout before this season.

He previously coached Cremonese in the second part of the 2022-23 campaign, but collected only seven draws and 11 defeats in 18 Serie A matches.

Last season, he secured promotion to Serie A by finishing second in Serie B with 23 wins, 12 draws and just three defeats.

After the break, Frosinone will visit Massimiliano Allegri’s Napoli at the Stadio Maradona, remarkably arriving with three more points than the Partenopei.
