Sarah Michelle Gellar & David Boreanaz Reflect On Fate Of “May December” Romance Between Buffy And Angel During ‘Buffy’ Emmy Reunion: “I Guess We’ll Never Find Out”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited on the Emmys stage tonight to present the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
While reflecting on the show celebrating 30 years since its premiere this upcoming March, Boreanaz remarked that he always thought their characters, Buffy and Angel, would end up together, despite the large age gap with Angel being a 241-year-old vampire.
“I guess we won’t find out,” Gellar answered.
Earlier this year, Hulu opted not to proceed with its pilot order for a Buffy: New Sunnydale reboot that would have been directed by Chloe Zhao from a script written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face).
Gellar revealed the news that the project was not going forward shortly after she attended the SXSW Film Festival for the premiere of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
“David and I would like to acknowledge that it has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew, and we feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people,” Gellar added before they opened the envelope to present the award to Matthew Rhys for his role in The Beast In Me.
The show has recently lost some of its staple cast members, with Michelle Trachtenberg having passed in February 2025 and Anthony Head passing in June this year. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, passed in March of this year.
Boreanaz, who has shows like The Angel, Bones and SEAL Team under his belt, has NBC’s reboot of The Rockford Files coming in January next year. He will succeed James Garner as James Rockford, the witty, world-weary and chronically broke private investigator Garner originated on the 1974 NBC series.
