When Disney+ launched in 2019, its biggest attraction was having the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, and Disney's enormous library of animated movies and shows in one place. Throw in decades of beloved Disney Channel originals, and the service immediately had an instant appeal the moment it debuted. However, this also meant that Disney+ initially seemed more like a destination for established franchises than a home of original standalone content.
Over the years since, Disney has combatted this by investing heavily in exclusive Disney+ content beyond its most recognizable properties. Few have been quite as successful as Percy Jackson & The Olympians, the live-action adaptation of Rick Riordan's beloved fantasy novels. The show's popularity demonstrated that Disney+ could create genuinely entertaining original prestige TV without relying entirely on Marvel, Star Wars, or the House of Mouse's established animated properties to attract new subscribers and keep audiences coming back for more.
With a 95% Rotten Tomatoes critic score and 82% viewer rating, Percy Jackson & The Olympians has been one of Disney+'s most celebrated exclusive series since its debut in December 2023. Almost three years later, however, that's officially changed. Thanks to a new licensing agreement between Disney and Netflix, the hit fantasy series is now available on both streaming platforms. This brings an end to Percy Jackson & The Olympians' reign as a flagship Disney+ exclusive, potentially establishing a fascinating precedent for how two of the world's biggest streaming services cooperate.
Percy Jackson & The Olympian Is No Longer A Disney+ Exclusive
In October 2026, Disney and Netflix reached a new licensing agreement that brought several Disney-owned titles to Netflix, including the arrival of Percy Jackson & The Olympians on the 4th. However, the arrangement is temporary, with the series initially available on Netflix for just three months. What’s more, the upcoming third season will remain exclusive to Disney+ when it debuts on November 20th, meaning Netflix subscribers won't be able to watch the entire story without eventually moving to Disney's platform.
It's a surprising development considering how successful Percy Jackson & The Olympians has been on Disney+. It was an immediate streaming hit following its December 2023 debut, accumulating 572 million viewing minutes in its first six days, making it one of the most successful Disney+ original launches (via THR). Season 2 saw a significant drop, clocking in 483 million U.S. minutes streamed in the first three weeks against season 1’s 1.3 billion (via Luminate), but still performed admirably for a Disney+ series not tied to a cinematic household name.
This success has now carried over to Netflix. The series entered the streamer's Top 10 rankings almost immediately, both internationally and in the United States. At the time of writing, the fantasy series remains Netflix's fifth most-watched television show globally (via Flixpatrol). This impressive performance makes Disney's apparent strategy behind the licensing agreement considerably easier to understand.
Disney+ has approximately 131.6 million to 135 million global paid subscribers (via Business of Apps), compared to Netflix's staggering 325 million (via Datarefs). By temporarily licensing Percy Jackson & The Olympians to Netflix, Disney is effectively advertising one of its biggest originals to a substantially larger audience. If even a fraction of those Netflix viewers become invested enough to subscribe to Disney+ for Percy Jackson season 3, the arrangement could prove enormously beneficial. Rather than surrendering an exclusive, Disney may have discovered an incredibly effective new subscriber acquisition strategy.
This Isn’t The First Time Netflix Has Licensed Original Content From Its Rivals
While Disney licensing one of its biggest original shows to Netflix might seem unprecedented, it's actually far from the first time rival streaming platforms have shared their exclusive programming. Netflix has increasingly become a secondary home for shows that originally debuted elsewhere Thanks to licensing arrangements involving Amazon MGM, for example, Prime Video-exclusive series such as The Tick, Sneaky Pete, and The Man in the High Castle have all made their way to Netflix.
Another particularly interesting example is Girls5Eva. The musical comedy originally debuted on Peacock in 2021, where it ran for two seasons before being canceled. Netflix subsequently acquired the series and commissioned a third season, rescuing a show that had previously been exclusive to one of its competitors. There's also the reverse situation involving Marvel's former Netflix originals. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders were all originally exclusive to Netflix before eventually departing the platform and finding a permanent home on Disney+.
However, despite their being precedent, the Percy Jackson & The Olympians licensing agreement remains especially interesting thanks to its deliberately limited three-month window. Rather than permanently relocating an established original, Disney appears to be using Netflix as a promotional platform for its own exclusive content. If this strategy successfully converts Netflix viewers into Disney+ subscribers, it could encourage similar arrangements between competing services. In that case, Percy Jackson & The Olympians making Netflix a temporary home might represent the beginning of a new era in streaming.
