Roma stadium approved: ‘It’s a certainty and it will be built’

Roma’s new stadium at Pietralata has been formally approved, with the Conferenza dei Servizi signing off the technical and economic feasibility project on Monday afternoon.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the decision came at around 13:15, when Commissioner Massimo Sessa read out the five points of the approval at the Consiglio Superiore dei Lavori Pubblici. Regional president Francesco Rocca and Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri attended in person, with Sports Minister Andrea Abodi joining remotely.

Gualtieri was emphatic that the project is now beyond doubt.

“At this point the Roma stadium is a certainty and it will be built,” he said. “It was a great team effort, fundamental in allowing Rome to have a strategic facility and the chance to regenerate a quadrant of our city. I thank Roma and the Friedkin family, with the desire to build one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world.”

He was also specific on timings. “The first stone in March? Yes, all the conditions are there to manage it. The stadium can be born in three years, considering the construction takes two and a half.”

Abodi highlighted the speed of the process, which concluded in 90 days rather than the 270 available, and noted that Italy submits its final Euro 2032 list to UEFA within days. He also paid tribute to former Roma presidents Dino Viola and Franco Sensi, “whose efforts in the past did not have the fortune of finding the same tools available today.”

Davide Bordoni, representing Matteo Salvini, said the hope is that work begins in 2027, the year of Roma’s centenary.

Attention now turns to the tender process, with Sessa confirming the club and the Comune will work together to accelerate it. Gualtieri added that the same effort is being applied to Lazio’s stadium plans.
