At least 10 people were killed and 64 others injured when pyrotechnic material exploded during a patron saint festival in central Mexico on Saturday night, Mexican authorities said.

The explosion occurred beside the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church in Temascalcingo, a municipality in Mexico State with about 66,000 residents. Hundreds of people were gathered to watch a fireworks display associated with the religious festival when the blast occurred, according to local reports.

The explosion caused a wall or part of an adjacent structure to collapse, leaving victims trapped amid debris as residents and emergency personnel searched for survivors.

Local authorities open investigation into cause of explosion

Temascalcingo is about 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.

Authorities had not determined the cause of the explosion, and the Mexico State Attorney General's Office opened an investigation.

A local bishop said two priests were among those injured.

Video shared on social media showed the aftermath of the explosion, with dozens of people moving through smoke and rubble as they searched the area following the blast.
