'With plenty of shocking twists': Hit horror series Carrie confirms exciting season 2 update

Translate

Mike Flanagan's take on Carrie, with author Stephen King on board as a producer, has just confirmed it will return for season 2. This might not come as a surprise for viewers, as the first season ended on a cliffhanger which set up a larger story for the protagonist, played by Summer H Howell.

Released on 7 October, the series from The Hunting of Hill House showrunner sets the 1974 novel in the present day, with Howell playing a wide-eyed, optimistic, homeschooled girl who's thrust into the carnage that is high school after her father dies.

Flanagan's frequent collaborator Samantha Sloyan plays Carrie's mum Margaret, with more stars including Prey's Amber Midthunder and Scream's Matthew Lillard.

A video announcement confirmed that Carrie will return for a second instalment after the success of the first season. The episodes of chapter one were framed within a true crime documentary, digging deeper into Carrie's explosive showdown at prom, with the ending teasing that a group of individuals with powers might be looking for the telekinetic teen.

"But Carrie's story doesn't stop at Prom – it's far from over… Much remains in store from Mike Flanagan and Stephen King, as new revelations will come to light, major character arcs, and plenty of shocking twists," Prime Video confirmed in today's announcement.

Meanwhile, Flanagan said that he's always envisioned a larger story for his Carrie.

"For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White's story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I'm incredibly grateful for Stephen's trust and support in exploring what comes next," he said.

Executive producer King added: "I can't wait for audiences to get to see what's down the road for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It's bound to be thrilling."

The Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, Peter Friedlander, has weighed in on the viewership that has been turning in for Carrie.

"Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether — including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers," Friedlander said.

"It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan's reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We're excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story."

Carrie season one is available to stream on Prime Video now. A second season has been confirmed.
