'Always Wanted To Play With Rory McIlroy': Sachin Baisoya Ahead Of DP World India Championship

The DP World India Championship is set to get underway in Delhi on Thursday, with the USD 4 million tournament featuring a star-studded field that includes seven Major champions, headlined by Rory McIlroy. While several global stars will be in action, Indian hopes will largely rest on experienced campaigners Shubhankar Sharma and Anirban Lahiri, who lead a 27-member home challenge at the prestigious event. Ahead of the tournament, Indian golfer Sachin Baisoya spoke to NDTV about his journey and reflected on the disappointment of missing out on last year's edition.

Here are some excerpts of the exclusive interaction:

NDTV: Tell us how do you feel about participating here, the experience and the opportunity of being in this tournament?

Sachin: I couldn't participate last time as well, but this time I have been able to participate. I would like to thank IGPL, A.M. Grin, because this is my home course and I have got the opportunity to play in this golf course.

NDTV: How beneficial will it be for a player like you to play in a home course?

Sachin: It is beneficial because we know almost everything. We play 18 holes here daily. We know everything, what to do, how to do it. We get a little benefit out of everything.

NDTV: Sachin, what targets are you going to hit today to tee off?

Sachin: I don't have any target, I just have to give my 100% and play my game. There are a lot of famous golfers here, like Rory McIlroy, Ryan Fox. It is a very elite field.

NDTV: How beneficial will it be for you to play with them?

Sachin: I had a dream to play with good players like Rory and Tommy. I have fulfilled my dream this time.

NDTV: If you do well here, you will get a chance to play in the European Tour. How long do you give yourself to reach there?

Sachin: If I play well here, if I get a card in the European Tour, I will play there. I will practice there and try to do better than what I am doing now.

NDTV: You have set a time target. How long do you want to play in the European Tour?

Sachin: I want to improve my game in 1-2 years. I want to improve my game. I will try to reach there in 1-2 years.

NDTV: How much has IGPL helped you in the development of domestic players?

Sachin: IGPL has done a lot for us. 27 Indian players are playing in this field.

NDTV: Do you consider yourself lucky?

Sachin: Yes, I am in the top 27.
