Star Trek's 2009 Movie Timeline Officially Returning For 60th Anniversary Event

While Star Trek had been dabbling with alternate timelines ever since the original series, 2009's Star Trek film went all in on the concept and kicked off an entire film trilogy based in the somewhat divisive Kelvin Timeline. Created when Nero traveled back in time and attacked the USS Kelvin, this new reality allowed the franchise to reinvent Kirk, Spock, and the original Enterprise crew without erasing decades of established continuity.

The result was a much more action-heavy take on Star Trek, led by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as younger versions of Kirk and Spock. Although some longtime fans pushed back against the blockbuster thriller approach and major departures from the Prime Timeline, the reboot introduced the franchise to a new generation and became a major theatrical success.

More than 15 years later, the Kelvin Timeline remains one of Star Trek's most unique and expansive alternate reality stories, and it's making an official return this month thanks to a new update from Arc and Cryptic (via TrekMovie).

Fans of the 2009 Star Trek timeline (and the entire Kelvin Timeline trilogy for that matter) are getting a big surprise to celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary this year, as Star Trek Online introduces the Rediscovered update alongside a packed content roadmap for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. Starting this month, console gamers will gain access to the new Romulan Narada Starship, as well as a ton of other content from across all generations of Star Trek.

The Narada is the clearest connection to the Kelvin Timeline on the newest roadmap, bringing Nero's enormous Romulan mining vessel from Star Trek (2009) to consoles as a playable T6 Miracle Worker Juggernaut. It follows the recent Kelvin Timeline Starship Bundle, however, which added the Salcombe, Armstrong, and Newton classes alongside several alternate ship designs and cosmetics inspired by the reboot films.

The season brings together multiple eras of Spock, with Ethan Peck voicing his Strange New Worlds version, Piotr Michael voicing the older Captain Spock associated with the Star Trek 6 era, and Leonard Nimoy returning as the original Commander Spock through archived dialogue. Players will encounter them during the new episode, "The City on the Edge of Never," while the new space TFO "Know Thy Enemy" places players inside B'vat's Klingon holosimulation.

Returning TFOs and events will continue through the remainder of 2026, alongside experimental graphics improvements and new Legendary Veteran Heavy Destroyers, before Star Trek Online's 17th anniversary arrives in February 2027 with another season, additional Deep Space content, a new TFO feature, and the introduction of Tier 7 Reputation.

Star Trek Online's Rediscovered update is launching September 22 on PC and November 10 on consoles, and it's the perfect time to jump in if you're a longtime fan of the franchise.
