Sooners star Stone injured in practice collision with scout team player

Oklahoma star defensive tackle David Stone suffered a knee injury at Monday's practice that will be evaluated throughout the week.

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said Tuesday that Stone's knee "kind of popped out" when he collided with a scout team player during the Sooners' "jog-through" Monday.

X-rays on Stone's knee were positive, according to Venables, who said Stone reported a pain level of 2 out of 10. Venables added that Stone was not injured while playing offense, as had been reported.

Asked about other options at Stone's position, Venables indicated that he's not ruling out the junior for the SEC opener Saturday at No. 2 Georgia. Veterans Trent Wilson, Bishop Thomas and Nigel Smith III will be part of the defensive tackle rotation.

"Depth is OK there," Venables said of the defensive tackle spot. "Great opportunity. If David is unavailable this week, we're going to need some guys to step up and play big, play with heavy hands and great pad level, striking people."

Stone has 12 tackles, including two for loss and one-half sack, through three games this season. He was the No. 6 overall recruit in the 2024 class and had 42 tackles, including eight for loss and 1.5 sacks, last season.

This spring, Stone ranked as ESPN's No. 4 defensive tackle prospect for the 2027 NFL draft.
