KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 — Malaysia’s tourism sector continues to show positive momentum by recording 28.8 million international visitors from January to August this year, a 1.8 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (promotion) Mohd Akbal Setia said the positive performance reflects the continued appeal of Malaysia as a tourism destination and the importance of strengthening international tourism partnerships.
“The development is particularly relevant as the country continues to strengthen its industry under the Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 campaign,” he said.
He said this when delivering a speech on behalf of Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing at the opening of the International Tourism, Arts and Culture Exhibition and Conference (INTACT) 2026 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here today.
Mohd Akbal said tourism is an important economic driver contributing over 15 per cent to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP), with its benefits extending across the tourism value chain to support businesses and livelihoods from hotels and e-hailing services to local artisans and family-run restaurants.
Touching on the event, Mohd Akbal said INTACT had garnered strong participation, underscoring the platform’s growing influence and capabilities.
“In only its second edition, INTACT has brought together 154 exhibitors from 35 countries, reflecting the organisers and industry partners’ commitment to establishing this event as an international platform for tourism, arts, and culture sectors,” he said.
He added that the platform is vital for expanding joint promotions and creating new tourism experiences that benefit both destinations and local communities.
Mohd Akbal also encouraged all exhibitors and participants to make full use of the event to establish business connections and explore long-lasting opportunities for collaboration. — Bernama
