Teachers’ Day: Ekiti govt recruits 5,530 teachers, gives ₦70.5 million to outstanding ones

The Ekiti State Government on Monday says it has recruited no fewer than 5,530 teachers into its public primary and secondary schools in the last four years.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who disclosed this at the Ekitiparapo Pavilion, Ado Ekiti, during the World Teachers Day 2026 celebration, also said his government distributed ₦70.5 million to outstanding teachers across the state’s 16 local government areas.
Giving the breakdown of the recruitment, Mr Oyebanji said 430 teachers were recruited into the Teaching Service Commission in 2022; 500 in 2023/2024; 1,600 in 2025/2026. SUBEB: 1,500 in the 2022/2023 session, and another 1,500 in 2026.
He said the beneficiaries of the distributed funds were recognised for outstanding performance and commitment to their responsibilities, and came from public primary and secondary schools, private schools, and other administrative cadres in the education sector.
He disclosed that all 203 public secondary schools have ICT laboratories, Interactive Boards, and 5KVA inverters, while 125 of them have internet facilities.
“Old school buildings were renovated/rehabilitated in all the schools,s and perimeter fencing was provided for 54 public secondary schools. Additionally, 48 Public Secondary Schools were provided with CCTV cameras,s and 85 more schools will have theirs this month.
“We are committed to regular payment of salary, disbursement of revolving car and housing Loans for eligible secondary school teachers,s and I assure you that we will continue to prioritise the welfare packages for all our teachers in the state public schools,” the governor said.
Mr Oyebanji thanked the teachers for their continued support, adding that the government was committed to making the celebration worthwhile and memorable.
“As a government, we appreciate the central place of teachers in the education value chain, and we shall always be committed to making this celebration worthwhile and memorable.
“I want to sincerely appreciate our teachers for their unwavering support since the inception of our administration. Their commitment and dedication to duty have enhanced and improved teaching and learning outcomes.
“I want to thank the State Executives of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Association of Public School Head Teachers of Nigeria (APSHON), the leadership of the Coalition of Private School Owners and all our committed teachers for being reputable partners in progress,” he stated.

Oyebanji appealed to the teachers to vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 16 January presidential election, noting that the president’s re-election “is crucial to the continuity of our Shared Prosperity Agenda in Ekiti State.”
The state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Lawrence Adedeji, and his counterpart in the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), represented by Austin Bamidele, also lauded Mr Oyebanji for his commitment to teachers’ welfare and the development of the education sector.
They appealed to the governor to fulfil his promises to the teachers on the payment of all outstanding emoluments and welfare packages, stressing that the celebration of teachers should go beyond a single day in October.
