Given the fact Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most hugely successful AAA game releases of the last few decades, this probably won't come as a huge surprise to you, but we now have official confirmation: Hogwarts Legacy 2 is very much on the way. This follows months of job listings and a new hire that made it pretty clear a sequel was on the way, alongside a definitive statement from Warner Bros. that appeared to hint at a 2027 release window.
While I'm not entirely certain we can bank on 2027 for Hogwarts Legacy 2, we do now know beyond any shadow of a doubt that the game is coming. Unfortunately, it wasn't revealed with a trailer or exciting social media tease, but a letter to shareholders. Try not to pass out from the excitement.
In a new letter to shareholders, Warner Bros. Discovery acknowledged the existence of the new Harry Potter RPG. This letter is a huge document that basically brags about how great WB is, referencing things like its 150 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and the recent success of Game Of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon. The letter is, of course, designed to showcase the company's ability to "consistently deliver compelling, high-quality content that resonates with our increasingly global audience remains a key differentiator and foundational long-term value driver as consumption habits continue to evolve."
Who cares about any of that guff though, right? The letter eventually gets to the bit you care about: the future of WB Games. The company has had some big hits of late, with the truly excellent LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight, and the mobile spinoff Game of Thrones: Dragonfire.
When it came to Hogwarts Legacy 2, they had this to say: "We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy."
Specifically naming Hogwarts Legacy 2 to investors is a strong sign that we could get an announcement sooner rather than later. While Summer Game Fest has been and gone, it's not impossible that the sequel could be one of the major reveals for The Game Awards in December. That's still weeks away, however, so we'll have to be patient.
Meanwhile, while I do think the rumored 2027 release window is pretty much entirely wishful thinking, Warner Bros. commitment to the Harry Potter franchise and overall corporate synergy (the HBO series arrives this Christmas) could lead the sequel to come sooner rather than later. Will that be at the expense of the game's overall quality? We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.
In other Harry Potter news, a new game called Defenders of Hogwarts has been released. This is a tabletop adventure that takes players back to the epic final battle between Harry and Voldemort during the Battle of Hogwarts. Designed by MinaLima and recommended for two to five players, 90-minute games will see you immerse yourself in the epic battle between good and evil.
