Uzbekistan continued its dominance in the world of chess with a gold medal finish at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand on Sunday.
India, which entered this tournament as defending champion, bungled its title defence courtesy a 2-2 draw with Hungary in the final round. India’s dropped point confirmed Uzbekistan’s gold medal while its final fixture against Ukraine in the open event was still in progress.
India’s campaign ended with 18 match points and 28.5 game points in 11 rounds, tied with Germany in both tallies. India’s triumph over Germany in one of the earlier rounds helped give the side an edge in deciding the silver medal.
Reigning world champion D. Gukesh suffered a shock defeat on Board 4 to Gleb Dudin, but Arjun Erigaisi beat Peter Leko on Board 2 to secure a vital match point for India.
R. Pragnanandhaa and Nihal Sarin were both held to draws, by Richard Rapport on Board 1 and Benjamin Gledura on Board 3 respectively.
