"They Don't Even Want To Field Your Call": Dallas Mavericks Have No Interest In Kyrie Irving Trade As Insider Shuts Down Growing Speculation

Dallas has been telling teams the same thing about Kyrie Irving since June, he is not available. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks will not even take the call, and the recent trade chatter has little to do with real conversations. Miami was linked to the veteran guard in a report days ago, and Sam Mitchell argued Houston should go get him. Dallas is 4-2, though, and Irving sat out Monday against Sacramento with an injured left knee. Stein says the noise has gotten well ahead of the facts.

Why The Mavericks Won't Field Calls On Kyrie Irving

Stein has tracked this story since the summer, and he sounded tired of the noise. “The Kyrie Irving talk to me is so bizarre. I've been writing about this since June. June is when the Mavs started telling teams Kyrie Irving is not available,” Stein said. “You can call for him; we are not making him available.”

Interest was easy to understand. Mitchell said Irving would make Houston the best team in the league, and ESPN's Shams Charania reported days ago that Miami was expected to be among several teams watching his availability. The 34-year-old guard has also looked sharp since returning from a torn ACL that cost him all of the 2025-26 season. Against the Rockets, he scored 35 points with nine assists, hitting 12 of 19 shots and five of eight from three.

Stein does not buy the urgency. “But in the past few days, the external chatter, more like the media chatter, which is not really based on some real conversations, but like the media speculation and chatter about a Kyrie trade, has increased, and I'm like, ‘guys, the Mavs are 4-2. If they were 1-5 or even 2-4, I guess maybe then you could understand,'” he said.

What Stein Sees In Dallas' Early Start

Cooper Flagg and Irving have led the Mavericks to the 4-2 mark, and the veteran is averaging 21.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 39.0 percent from three in five games.

“But things have gone so well early, and the Mavs have consistently told teams they don't even want to field your call on Kyrie Irving,” Stein concluded.

The contract adds a layer. The nine-time All-Star is in the final guaranteed season of his deal, and he has said more than once he hopes to stay in Dallas instead of testing free agency next summer. An extension is the one move likely to end the speculation for now.

The knee is the nearer concern. “Dallas' Kyrie Irving has now been officially ruled out for tonight's game against Sacramento,” Stein reported. It is his second missed game of the season. He last played in the 116-111 NBA Cup win over Houston. Marcus Sasser is expected to take the starting point guard job, and Walter Clayton Jr. could see more minutes with Sergio de Larrea also out.
