Tom Brady spent twenty-three seasons around great arms, so when he says two quarterbacks in their late thirties and forties throw a prettier ball than anyone in the league, it deserves a second look. On the latest edition of #AskTom, the seven-time Super Bowl champion chose Aaron Rodgers of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams, and he went further by placing both near the top of the all-time list for how they spin it. His reasons reveal what really keeps a passer effective once the arm strength starts to fade.
Why Aaron Rodgers Of The Pittsburgh Steelers And Matthew Stafford Of The Los Angeles Rams Throw The Prettiest Passes In The NFL
A fan asked who throws the prettiest ball in the league today, and Brady gave two names without hedging.
"One is Aaron Rodgers and the other is Matthew Stafford," Brady replied.
His explanation sounds like a quarterback coach talking about mechanics. "Both those guys spin the ball as well as anybody that's ever played," Brady said. "They have silky-smooth deliveries. They're so accurate, and it's just effortless when it comes out of their hands."
The résumés fit the praise. Rodgers, 42, owns four MVP awards, the second most in NFL history, and has thrown for 1,487 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions while the Steelers sit at 4-2. Stafford, 38, won his first MVP last season and leads the league with 1,794 passing yards entering Week 7.

Their best throws show the same polish under pressure. Rodgers scrambled behind the line and launched a 61-yard Hail Mary from the Green Bay Packers' 35-yard line to beat the Detroit Lions in 2015, now remembered as the Miracle in Motown. Stafford, then a rookie, separated his non-throwing shoulder against the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and still stayed in to fire a tight spiral to Brandon Pettigrew for the winning touchdown.
What Tom Brady Told The Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs And San Francisco 49ers About Rat Poison
Brady also spoke to the three teams still unbeaten entering Week 7: the Minnesota Vikings, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Only San Francisco is 6-0, since the other two have already had their byes. Brady knows the danger of a perfect record, because his 2007 New England Patriots went 16-0 and still lost the Super Bowl.
Asked how a fast start turns into rat poison, he gave a short answer.
"It's called humility and self-awareness," Brady said.
Then he laid out the work behind it.
"You're never as good as you think, and you're never as bad as you think," Brady added. "In all these games you're winning, you better be correcting the problems. Because every team is now looking back at all the film study from the year, and they're gonna try to get you to play to your weakness."
Brady says the best opponents take away an offense's top weapons and force it to play left-handed. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have won three Super Bowls together in Kansas City, Kyle Shanahan has led San Francisco to two Super Bowl appearances, and Kevin O'Connell won a ring as the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator. Experience is not what these teams lack. Whether they fix their flaws before December and January is what Brady says will decide it.
