Marvel Officially Upgrades Iconic Team To Avengers Level

Translate

Nicolas Ayala is a Senior Writer for the Comics team at ScreenRant, with over five years of experience writing about Superhero media, action movies, and TV shows.

The Avengers meet their match in a famous supernatural team that challenges Earth's Mightiest Heroes in power and number. The Avengers set the gold standard for superhero teams in the Marvel Universe by becoming a decentralized global network that completely transcends the limitations of a single headquarters. Their philosophy evolved as they realized that global protection required an almost instant response to terrestrial and extraterrestrial threats. Numerous autonomous Avengers divisions popped up as a result, including the West Coast Avengers and the initially independent Young Avengers.

The Avengers directly influenced other prominent teams across the Marvel Universe, who adapted similar strategies and similarly ambitious goals. The most notable example is the Fantastic Four, a traditionally tight-knit family unit that expanded its original concept to create the Future Foundation, welcoming a massive roster of young geniuses, alien refugees, and surrogate heroes. Similarly, the X-Men looked to the Avengers' model of tactical divisions to organize their massive mutant population and established smaller mutant squads like X-Force, X-Factor, and the Marauders to manage everything from proactive covert operations to global security.

The Avengers are used to fighting supernatural threats nearly as often as they fight terrestrial and extraterrestrial foes, but they can't deal with every single antagonist without a major magical powerhouse like Doctor Strange or Scarlet Witch in their ranks. Hence, a specialized team needs to rise to the occasion.

The Midnight Sons Become The Midnight Militia

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #8; Written By Jed McKay; Art By Devmalya Pramanik & Rachelle Rosenberg

Moon Knight assembles the Midnight Militia

Moon Knight's war against the Mansion Ravenous reaches its climax after Marc Spector betrays the Midnight Sons to save Tigra and his friends. After seemingly betraying Blade, Ghost Rider, and Midnight Sons newcomer Daredevil, Clea activates a spell that frees both the Midnight Sons and the rest of the Mansion Ravenous' victims, including a rageful Tigra. Blade understands Moon Knight's betrayal had to feel authentic in order for Clea's spell to work, and Clea provides everyone with magical weapons to fight back. With everyone back together, Moon Knight assembles the "Midnight Militia" as they charge into battle.

This iteration of the Midnight Sons is the largest to date, and it's assembled in part by change. Heroes like Tigra and 8-Ball don't even know why someone like Daredevil is there, and most of the Mansion Ravenous' victims are regular humans who only become powerful enough to fight the villain thanks to Clea's energy constructs. Still, Marc Spector: Moon Knight establishes the most clear-cut beginning of a new era for the Midnight Sons, with an open door for the heroes present inside the Mansion Ravenous to be permanent members of the team.

Marvel Seems To Be Making The Midnight Sons A Permanent Staple

The Midnight Sons Are Finally Becoming An Actual Team

Blade, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil gather as the Midnight Sons

Despite their fame and their influence on adaptations like the Midnight Suns video game, the Midnight Sons have yet to become a consistent, long-running team like the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. However, Marc Spector: Moon Knight seems to finally elevate the group into a true institution. The fusion between the Midnight Mission and the Midnight Sons leads to the formation of the Midnight Militia, who are highly likely to defeat the Mansion Ravenous and stay together to fight future threats in the regular world.

The integration of the street-level Midnight Mission crew alongside top-tier occult powerhouses like Clea and Ghost Rider sets the stage for a permanent network designed to answer immediate paranormal crises parallel to the Avengers. After the events of Marc Spector: Moon Knight #8, the Midnight Sons may no longer be a loose partnership that disbands after a single battle. Human vigilantes like Daredevil and seasoned supernatural warriors like Blade can easily enlist for the long run and cement a unified defensive front against the darkest corners of the Marvel Universe.

Which characters would you like to see in a permanent Midnight Sons team?
