Joel Kinnaman’s R-Rated Bosch Replacement Now Has The Perfect Follow-Up Series

Dhruv is a Lead Writer in Screen Rant's New TV division. He has been consistently contributing to the website for over two years and has written thousands of articles covering streaming trends, movie/TV analysis, and pop culture breakdowns.
Before Screen Rant, he was a Senior Writer for The Cinemaholic, covering everything from anime to television, from reality TV to movies.
After high school, he was on his way to become a Civil Engineer. However, he soon realized that writing was his true calling. As a result, he took a leap and never looked back.
Joel Kinnaman served as one of the two leads in Netflix's best detective thriller from 2026. Based on Jo Nesbø's Detective Harry Hole book series, Netflix's Detective Hole features Kinnaman as the primary antagonist against Tobias Santelmann's titular Detective Hole. In its nine-episode runtime, Detective Hole immerses viewers in its dark Oslo setting while walking through a gripping murder mystery.
While Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole is not a completely subversive addition to the crime thriller genre, it finds its distinct identity though some intriguing creative decisions. For instance, it subtly adds supernatural layers to its overarching mysteries without compromising on realism. Instead of letting its central murders be the primary drivers of its story, the show even compels viewers with the rivalry between its two leads.
Joel Kinnaman's Tom Waaler and Tobias Santelmann's Harry Hole are two well-written detective characters. What makes them even more fascinating is how brilliantly the two actors portray them on the screen. Kinnaman particularly does a brilliant job of capturing Waaler's erratic behavior and struggles with his inner demons.
Kinnaman Is Brilliant In Detective Hole, But His Return Seems Unlikely In The Series
Even though Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole earned rave reviews from critics, Netflix has not yet renewed it for another season. In terms of viewership, the show seemingly performed fairly well and found its place among Netflix's top 10 shows for a few weeks. For now, though, its return on the streaming service is not guaranteed.
Given how Jo Nesbø has written over 10 Detective Hole books, the Netflix show seems to have enough content for many more seasons. However, even if the show gets more follow-ups, it seems unlikely Jole Kinnaman will be a part of them. His antagonistic character, Tom Waaler, outsmarts Detective Hole all the way till the end.
However, before Detective Hole season 1 ends its run, he ends up facing the consequences of his actions and meets his doom. Season 1 hints that Detective Hole could learn more about Tom Waaler's past in future potential seasons. This could mean that Waaler could still appear in flashbacks.
Considering his final fate in season 1, though, it seems unlikely Joel Kinnaman will have a major role in the show's future installments. Fortunately, Kinnaman is all set to star in another crime thriller, which seems to have a lot of potential.
Joel Kinnaman’s Upcoming Detective Show Gives Him The Perfect Detective Hole Follow-Up
Joel Kinnaman will serve as the titular lead in Prime Video's upcoming crime thriller, Bishop. Created by Little Marvin (Them) and Tony Saltzman (Dexter: Resurrection, Dexter: New Blood), the show centers on Detective Bishop Graves, a brilliant but scarred investigator based out of San Francisco. The show features a Robin Hood-esque narrative where the central killer only targets the elite.
His targets help him gain a cult following among the city's impoverished population, making it harder for Detective Bishop to catch him.
From its plot, Bishop already sounds like an intriguing addition to the crime thriller genre. While only time will tell whether it will earn the same level of acclaim as Detective Hole on Netflix, it is good to see how it gives Joel Kinnaman the opportunity to portray a more morally righteous detective character. Hopefully, the Prime Video series will be as compelling as Netflix's Detective Hole (if not more).
