Latest report: SAFA make decision on Pitso Mosimane

Contractual talks between SAFA and Pitso Mosimane were concluded over the weekend. This is according to a report by SABC Sport‘s Velile Mnyandu

The development comes with Bafana Bafana already facing an important September international window. Their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign begins against Guinea before a trip to Egypt to face Eritrea.

The coach will return for his second spell in charge of the national team. He previously coached Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012.

His expected appointment comes after Hugo Broos ended a successful five-year tenure. It included consecutive AFCON qualifications and a bronze medal at the 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast.

Broos also guided South Africa to the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage. It marked the first time Bafana Bafana reached the knockout phase of the competition.

The timing of Mosimane’s return means he could have little time to settle before facing two demanding AFCON qualifying fixtures.

Bafana are scheduled to host Guinea on Saturday, 26 September, although the venue has not yet been confirmed. Gauteng and North West are reportedly being considered, with proximity to OR Tambo International Airport important because the team is expected to travel to Egypt immediately after the match.

Three days later, on Wednesday, 30 September, Bafana Bafana will face Eritrea in Egypt. Eritrea are taking the fixture outside their country because they do not currently have a stadium that meets the required CAF and FIFA standards.

The Group D campaign also includes Kenya and Guinea, with Kenya already guaranteed a place at the AFCON tournament as one of the co-hosts. Only the group winner will qualify through the qualifying process.

For Mosimane, the trip to Egypt will bring back memories of one of the most successful periods of his coaching career. He spent almost three years with Al Ahly, winning two CAF Champions League titles and establishing himself as one of Africa’s most decorated coaches.

His return now gives the experienced coach an immediate opportunity to begin building his second Bafana Bafana era with qualification for the 2027 AFCON firmly in sight.
