A classic 10/10 RPG released by Square Enix back in 1995 is getting a full remake for modern consoles pretty soon, and if you want to relive the game’s story, or perhaps experience it for the very first time, be sure to keep it on your radar. The company has been making an effort to bring back several of its classic experiences to modern platforms in a variety of ways. The clearest example of this will soon be seen with the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final part of the FF7 Remake series.
Of course, Final Fantasy is not the only big franchise the company is known for, and it’s certainly not the only one getting a makeover for current hardware. As highlighted by a report on PlayStation Lifestyle, Square Enix has officially confirmed that it is working on a remake of an RPG that was originally released in 1995, and the new game will be released in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC, giving players access to an epic adventure with a new look.
Announced during the latest Nintendo Direct event in September, Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United is a full remake of Romancing SaGa 3, released in 1995 for the SNES, exclusively in Japan. This classic JRPG only really became playable in Western markets in 2019, when a remastered version of the original game was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS Vita, mobile devices (iOS and Android), and PC. However, Destinies United is a complete makeover of the title, built from the ground up.
Romancing SaGa 3 is a 10/10 Square Enix masterpiece RPG, even if an underrated one at that. Nevertheless, players will now be able to experience it from a different, fully 3D perspective with voice-over acting and new gameplay mechanics. The original title was a turn-based RPG that looked and felt a lot like the pixel-era Final Fantasy games, but the new remake, Destinies United, changes things a bit. While it is still fundamentally a turn-based game, there are new layers to it.
For example, combat now features a timeline-based battle system and a mechanic called United Attacks, meant to deepen tactical combat. This comes alongside the return of the Glimmer and Formation systems. In addition to that, the reinterpretation of this Square Enix SNES RPG masterpiece also features the Freeform Scenario System, where choices affect the stories you experience with the eight playable characters and 20+ allies to recruit.
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United is arriving pretty soon, considering its announcement happened just now. The game will be released across all aforementioned platforms on February 16, 2027, so if you’re a fan of the series, the genre, or want to get in touch with this Square Enix RPG, be sure to keep it on your radar.
