Ben Shelton celebrated his 24th birthday with a straight sets victory over Daniel Altmaier to move into the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Friday.
Shelton, who lost both of his matches for USA at the Davis Cup and later withdrew from the Laver Cup, won 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Earlier in the day, Alex de Minaur moved into the third round after his opponent, Alex Molcan, retired with an undisclosed ailment. Qualifier Rei Sakamoto beat 23rd-seeded Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4.
Later in the day, top-seeded Alexander Zverev, who defeated Shelton in the US Open final, is scheduled to play Chinese wild-card entry Wu Yibing, while Novak Djokovic is set to face Hubert Hurkacz.
