BJP steps up attack on Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over JNU allegations, with women MPs set to meet President Murmu

NEW DELHI: A delegation of BJP women MPs will meet President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday over sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, news agency ANI reported citing sources. The development comes a day after BJP Mahila Morcha workers staged protests across the country, demanding action against Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha.Protesters also burnt effigies of leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and accused the Congress leadership of remaining silent on the matter.

The protests followed reports that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) had dismissed Akoijam from his position as a professor after an internal committee examined allegations by 11 female students. The BJP has claimed that the committee found the allegations to be true. The claims have not been independently verified in the material available.Delhi Police registered an FIR following a complaint by JNU's chief security officer. The case was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the investigation was underway.
