CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A police officer in Misamis Oriental is now behind bars and undergoing inquest proceedings after being accused of raping a minor, the provincial police office confirmed Wednesday.

In an advisory, the Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office (MORPPO) said the personnel was taken into custody following a complaint for violation of the Anti-Rape Law of 1997 (RA 8353).

Upon receiving the report, MORPPO initiated investigative procedures, secured assistance for the minor victim, and referred her to proper authorities for examination and intervention.

Parallel administrative actions are underway against the officer under Philippine National Police (PNP) regulations.

Col. Al Abanales, MORPPO director, ordered an expeditious, impartial probe and promised no preferential treatment or cover-up.

“We strongly condemn any form of sexual violence, especially when the victim is a minor. Such an allegation involving a police officer is a serious matter and will be dealt with accordingly,” Abanales said in a statement.

“The uniform does not place anyone above the law. We will ensure that due process is observed, the rights and welfare of the victim are protected, and accountability is pursued based on the evidence,” he added.

Police appealed to the media and the public to protect the victim’s identity, privacy, and dignity by refraining from sharing details that may lead to her identification.

Abanales emphasized that they will not tolerate misconduct that erodes public trust in the police force./coa
