Habagat persists as LPA may enter PAR, become tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area (LPA), which may enter the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday or Wednesday, is forecast to develop into a tropical depression by Thursday or Friday, according to the state weather bureau on Monday.

In its 5 a.m. weather forecast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the LPA formed outside the PAR around 2 a.m. Monday. It was last estimated at 2,090 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas as of 3 a.m.

“There is a possibility for this to become a tropical depression by Thursday, September 24, or Friday, September 25,” weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said.

He noted that the tropical depression will be given the local name Queenie. 

Meanwhile, Aurelio said that the southwest monsoon or habagat will continue to affect the western section of Southern Luzon. It will prevail in the area in the next three days. 

He also shared that Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will see fair weather on Monday, aside from chances of isolated rainshowers due to thunderstorms.
