Where To Find (& Summon) Shovel The Quasit In Baldur's Gate 3

You can add many different members and familiars to your party in Baldur's Gate 3, including a mischievous little creature named Shovel The Quasit. Among the various animal companions you can get using spells like Find Familiar, Shovel is a special case, acting as a tiny demon whose skills can be useful. However, to get Shovel, you must first summon them using their own special scroll found in Act 1.

Since Shovel is a Qausit, she is far more valuable to the party in a fight than some of the other familiar pets in Baldur's Gate 3. While you can purchase Shovel's summoning spell from some merchants, the chances are very low. If you're looking not to spend any gold, there is a single location where you can find the means to summon the Quasit without any hassle.

Investigate The Hidden Corners Of The Blighted Village

You can find the Scroll to summon Shovel quite early while completing some of the main story and side quests. The Scroll for Shovel can be found in Blighted Village, a location found in Act 1 and central to the Necromancy of Thay side quest. Following this side quest will eventually lead your party to a hidden trapdoor underneath one of the Blighted Village's buildings, where a hidden path leads you to an area full of coffins.

The lever that reveals a hidden door leading to this space is near the crates to the left of the large bookshelf in the basement of the Blighted Village building. It should be found on the wall, where simply interacting with it will trigger the passageway to open. Once you get this space open, follow the path that leads to an open area that contains several caskets.

Interacting with any of the Caskets triggers a fight against several Undead, similar to where you found Withers in Act 1. If you or one of your party members is a Cleric Class in Baldur's Gate 3, you can use Turn Undead to end this fight quickly.

Once all the enemies are defeated, check the caskets lying around for various loot items. Note that some of the caskets may have busted open during the fight, but their contents should be lying around in that same spot. You should be able to find the Scroll amongst the debris, in a casket immediately to the right of where you enter the larger space full of coffins.

How To Use Shovel The Quatsit

Once you have the Scroll of Summon Quasit, you can cast it like you would any other scroll to meet Shovel. Once you talk to the small demon, you'll quickly realize that their short temper and trouble-making attitude is something you'll have to navigate carefully. For example, when summoning Shovel, she'll give you "advice" about using a particular item to treat burns to get past a magic mirror in the same area where you found the Scroll.

You don't want to listen to Shovel at all, as the creature is lying most of the time. The mirror will quiz you before letting you pass through, and the question about the item is one it will ask. If you listen to Shovel and use her answer, the mirror will mark you as an enemy and unleash an attack.

A Wizard character can learn the Summon Quasit spell permanently like any other spell from a scroll, for a small gold cost. Doing this allows Shovel to be summoned and re-summoned constantly using the "Cheeky Quasit" spell in your character tab bar.

Upon the first summon, Shovel will ask you if you want to change her name to Fork or Basket, but this choice is completely optional and won't affect anything other than her name being switched in dialogue. At this point, you can have Shovel act in battle as an allied character, with the character able to attack enemies and turn invisible to aid your party in combat.

Although you may be tempted to use Shovel extensively in Act 1, keep in mind that once the Quasit dies, you won't be able to summon her again unless you reload your game from an older save when they were alive. Shovel doesn't have many Hit Points, so it may be best to keep her out of battles, especially since she can't help allies up. One of the best uses for Shovel is her Invisibility to help steal things, such as a merchant's wares or other items later in the game.

Overall, Shovel is a quirky character with plenty to say, making her a funny companion compared to other allies you might recruit during a playthrough. Whether you use her as a scout, thief, or someone to scare targets, Shovel has her uses beyond traditional companions. Finally, summoning Shovel will also unlock the Rude, Crude, and Full of Attitude Achievement, making doing so once recommended in any beginner's Baldur's Gate 3 journey.
