Ateneo de Zamboanga mourns 2 killed in campus shooting

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) is grieving the deaths of two people after a shooting inside its Junior High School building in Barangay Tumaga, Zamboanga City, on Tuesday morning.
AdZU President Fr. Guillrey Anthony “Ernald” Andal, SJ, confirmed that two individuals died in the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident,” Andal said during a meeting at the Ateneo Tumaga campus.

He noted that upon learning of the situation, school officials immediately went to the site to check on the students, ensure their safety, and facilitate proper evacuation.
Andal acknowledged the deep concern the tragedy has caused among parents and guardians.
He said the university has been preparing for a security simulation exercise, underscoring its commitment to student and personnel safety.
“This is our primary concern. That is why we are deeply saddened by the incident this morning; that there are two fatalities,” he added.

The university is coordinating closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to identify the victims and notify their families.
All classes have been cancelled for the day.

“We will remain cooperative with our government officials,” Andal said, appealing for patience as details are verified.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units from Regional Office 9 and the Zamboanga City Police Office promptly responded to the reported shooting inside the private school.
Authorities coordinated with school officials to secure the campus and ensure the orderly movement of students, faculty, and staff.
“The situation is now under control,” the PNP said in its statement.

Police urged parents and guardians to remain calm and follow school advisories on designated pick-up arrangements to avoid congestion.
