The Mindanao grid will be placed under yellow alert on Saturday, September 12, 2026, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippine said.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert will be in effect from 5 to 7 p.m.

The grid's available capacity is 2,623 MW but expected peak demand is 2,456 MW, the company said.

Some plants are also on forced outage or running on derated capacity:

  • 13 plants on forced outage in September 2026;
  • 7 plants on forced outage since August;
  • 4 plants on forced outage since July;
  • 1 plant on forced outage since June;
  • 2 plants on forced outage since January;
  • 1 plant on forced outage since 2025;
  • 1 plant on forced outage since 2024; and
  • 7 plants running on derated capacities.

These have resulted in a total of 740.7 MW unavailable to the grid.

The NGCP also said Mindanao's large coal plants GNPK 2 and 3 are unavailable, which contributed to the declaration of a yellow alert.

"A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," the NGCP said. —KG, GMA News
