Beloved British classic Pride and Prejudice confirms release date as Netflix drops first look at show

It's a great year to be a Jane Austen fan as lovers of the insightful, witty author are being treated to multiple adaptations for the big and small screens, including Netflix's hotly-anticipated Pride and Prejudice, which has just confirmed a release date.

Following the acclaimed Pride and Prejudice reimagining, The Other Bennet Sister, and a new Sense and Sensibility film releasing this month, Austenites will soon feast their eyes upon a fresh take on Elizabeth Bennet's story penned by Dolly Alderton.

Starring The Crown's Emma Corrin and Slow Horses' Jack Lowden as Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, the six-parter is set to hit our streaming screens on 3 December, making it the perfect watch for the festive period.

Netflix has also released some first-look images and new posters for its Pride and Prejudice as part of The Austen Festival, currently celebrating the writer in Bath, where she lived between 1801 and 1806.

The imagery offers a glimpse of what to expect come December. The teaser art captures Corrin's Elizabeth and Lowden's Darcy giving their backs to the camera as they look out in the distance.

Meanwhile, stills from the series give us a better look at the dynamics between the Bennets and the rest of Meryton's polite society right as Austen dissected them in the 1813 classic.

Corrin can be seen as a pensive Elizabeth whilst on a walk in one snap, with Lowden photographed in a similar melancholy mood out in a field.

While we might have to wait to see Elizabeth and Darcy together, the newly released images include a sweet moment between Corrin's protagonist and elder sister Jane (Freya Mavor), as well as first snaps of Daryl McCormack as Mr Bingley, Jamie Demetriou as Mr Collins, and Louis Partridge as Mr Wickham.

Rufus Sewell and Olivia Colman are perfectly cast as Mr and Mrs Bennet, with the first-look images immortalising the characters in some of their favourite activities – reading and passing judgement for the former, and entertaining in the parlour for the latter.

More pictures offer a closer look at carefree, spirited sisters Kitty (Hollie Avery) and Lydia (Rhea Norwood) running in the yard, while solitary sister Mary (Hopey Parish) can be seen playing the piano.

Anticipated by an atmospheric teaser dropping in February, Pride and Prejudice promises to be a "classic" and "faithful" adaptation that will "reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters" to both longtime and new fans.

Netflix's Pride and Prejudice starts streaming on 3 December.
