Dave Bautista’s Insane Kratos Transformation For God Of War Silences Skeptics

Dhruv is a Lead Writer in Screen Rant's New TV division. He has been consistently contributing to the website for over two years and has written thousands of articles covering streaming trends, movie/TV analysis, and pop culture breakdowns.
Before Screen Rant, he was a Senior Writer for The Cinemaholic, covering everything from anime to television, from reality TV to movies.
After high school, he was on his way to become a Civil Engineer. However, he soon realized that writing was his true calling. As a result, he took a leap and never looked back.
For years, Dave Bautista was widely fancast as God of War's Kratos. Surprisingly, when he finally landed the part in Prime Video's live-action God of War, many questioned whether he was the right fit. The skepticism came in the wake of Dave Bautista losing a lot of weight and deciding to move away from physically demanding roles like Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Dave Bautista was not the first choice to play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War. Before him, Ryan Hurst was cast for the role. He seemed almost perfect for the part because he had previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Unfortunately, an injury forced Hurst to step back from the role, paving the way for Bautista to lead the show's roster.
While many defended Dave Bautista's casting and labeled him as the perfect choice for the part, others believed he had lost too much muscle over the years to accurately embody Kratos. Just a few months after his casting, Dave Bautista has already silenced all doubters with his impressive transformation.
Dave Bautista Has Already Gained 20 Pounds To Play God Of War’s Kratos
Soon after his casting, Dave Bautista revealed he was training again and focusing on putting on muscle before the filming of Prime Video's God of War ensues. A few months into his training, Bautista has now revealed he has already gained 20 pounds of muscle for the part. He even posted a video to show his transformation, and it is hard not to notice how he already looks like Kratos from God of War's Norse saga:
This is the second update the former WWE star has given on his physique while preparing to play Kratos in God of War. The first update came just two weeks after he started training for the part (via Instagram), where he already seemed prepared for the role. After the 20-pound gain, Dave Bautista now closely resembles Kratos from the games' Norse Saga.
The actor's shaved head and overgrown beard further add to the resemblance, and it seems likely he will gain a few more pounds before the show's filming ensues. Now that his transformation has already silenced all skeptics, it is hard not to wait for the show's behind-the-scenes stills that will reveal him in Kratos' full Spartan armor.
Bautista’s Casting Is Becoming The Prime Video Adaptation’s Biggest Strength
Prime Video's God of War is cleverly skipping the games' Greek mythology arc and jumping ahead to the Norse Saga, which is more dense and poignant in terms of storytelling. It features Kratos as a transformed, grief-ridden man who works on his relationship with his son. Owing to the emotional heft of the source material, the Prime Video series needed someone with a good acting range to play Kratos.
At the same time, since the original game franchise's core appeal lies in its action and larger-than-life godly characters, someone with a towering frame had to be cast for the part. After his transformation, Bautista not only seems to perfectly convey Kratos' immense physical presence but also has the acting chops to capture the emotional weight of his story.
The live-action God of War adaptation has experienced a few early production setbacks, which have delayed its filming. However, Dave Bautista's casting as Kratos has seemingly turned out to be a blessing for the Prime Video series. If everything else falls into place for the upcoming video game adaptation, it will easily find its place among the greatest fantasy shows of our time.
Adapted from the PlayStation video game franchise, God of War is an action-adventure drama series in development under Amazon. The series will center on series protagonist Kratos, but no other information on the series has been divulged.
