Tom Hanks Sets Broadway Return in ‘This World of Tomorrow’

Translate

Tom Hanks will return to Broadway in his own play, This World of Tomorrow.

Hanks will star opposite Tony Award Winner Kelli O’Hara, with both reprising their roles from the Off-Broadway run at The Shed in 2025. The story follows Bert Allenberry, who lives at the end of the 21st century and decides to travel back in time to the 1939 World’s Fair, where he meets a woman and falls in love.

The limited engagement is slated for a Shubert Theater in fall 2027, but the exact theater and dates have yet to be announced.

Hanks penned the play with James Glossman, with the plot based on a series of short stories written by Hanks in the book Uncommon Type.

This marks Hanks return to Broadway after starring in Nora Ephron’s play Lucky Guy in 2013, which earned Hanks a Tony nomination. O’Hara was Tony nominated last season for her role in Fallen Angels, opposite Rose Byrne, marking her ninth Tony nomination.

Kenny Leon, who directed last season’s The Balusters and the 2025 revival of Othello, is returning to direct the play for Broadway. Brian Moreland is producing in association with The Shed.

“I’m so excited to continue this work on this amazing new American play,” said Leon. “There’s no time like the present to further explore this story of love and time travel from Glossman and Hanks. More than anything, I look forward to even more audiences who will have the chance to witness the onstage chemistry of Kelli O’Hara and Tom Hanks.”
