Jon Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers Take Aim at Trump, Michigan’s Haley Stevens on Eve of Election Day

With less than 24 hours until Election Day, and a potential control flip of Congress, late-night hosts didn’t waste any time on Monday taking jabs at those making headlines heading into the midterms, namely Donald Trump and former Democratic Senate candidate Haley Stevens.

On The Daily Show, Jon Stewart seemed quite confused why Trump — who has been on the campaign trail for the past month, advocating for Republican candidates across the U.S. — used his final pre-election speech to talk about the controversial renovations he made to the newly reopened Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C.

“That was the president of the United States, on the day before the midterms, choosing to make a speech at the reflecting pool to talk about the reflecting pool. No symbolism, no metaphors, just straight-up pool maintenance. That was Donald Trump’s ‘I had it cleaned’ speech, if you will,” the host said, drawing laughter from his live audience.

After calling the president’s priorities “badly misplaced,” Stewart noted that “Democrats appear in position for a wave election” in the U.S. House and Senate “as long as the remaining couple of days before the election are bombshellless, drama-free, non-earthquakey.”

Welp… it looks like Michigan didn’t get that memo. Stevens caused quite the shakeup over the weekend with her shocking endorsement of GOP candidate Mike Rogers for Senate after breaking with Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

“We all knew there was drama in Michigan when Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed defeated Haley Stevens in a contentious primary for the Democratic nomination, but Stevens has always been very clear as to their shared goal of defeating Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers,” Stewart said, before clips played of Stevens repeatedly criticizing the GOP candidate.

“What the fuck happened? This is like the most diabolical episode of Fargo I’ve ever seen,” the host quipped.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel kicked off his overtly political monologue with a reference to Trump and his continued legal woes, particularly in relation to the dead sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. “Remember that birthday card Trump didn’t draw for Jeffrey Epstein on his 50th birthday? This is why Donald Trump sued The Wall Street Journal for $10 billion for claiming he did draw that card,” said Kimmel. “He’s got a hefty bag full of frivolous lawsuits out there trying to protect himself against the blue wave, which seems to be headed his way tomorrow. Tomorrow is midterm election day.”

Kimmel then mocked Trump’s increasingly half-hearted rallies, focusing a recent event at the scandal-plagued reflecting pool in Washington D.C. “More than 57 million Americans have already cast their ballots. Trump made his closing arguments. He chose to do that in front of his ill-fated reflecting pool. What better way to reassure the public that they are in good hands than in front of a pool you’ve repeatedly botched to the tune of $16 million?” he joked. “Donald Trump, the man who famously promised to “drain the swamp,” made his last stand at the site of his own man-made swamp, standing victoriously in front of this hard-won pond like the soldiers who triumphed at Iwo Jima.”

He added, “Somehow, the ‘Energizer Dummy’ managed to blabber his way through 30 rallies over the past 32 days, and with the campaign for control of Congress at the 2-yard line, Trump is laser-focused on the issues that matter most.”

Over on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the host devoted his Monday night “Closer Look” segment to recent dramatic developments in the Alaska and Michigan Senate races. In Alaska, Meyers recapped that The New York Times reported that Democratic challenger Mary Peltola’s campaign was behind an effort to recruit independent candidate Daniel J. Sullivan as a spoiler.

Meyers was shocked — and kind of impressed.

“This is very fucking funny. I mean, fuckin’ A, they finally did it: the Democrats finally did something as dirty as the Republicans,” Meyers said of the Times allegations.

“I mean it’s not systematically lobbying state election officials to send alternate slates of electors to Congress as part of an illegal scheme to undermine a presidential election and then storming the Capitol, shitting in the rotunda and threatening to kill Mike Pence dirty but it’s still pretty dirty,” he added.

Turning to Michigan, Meyers also addressed Stevens’ shocking Sunday endorsement of Rogers, or as Meyers described it: “All hell broke loose.”

In particular, Meyers highlighted Stevens’ awkward interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN Sunday night, in which she struggled to answer his questions. After one particularly long pause, Stevens asked if what Cooper had said was a question.

“No, I wanted to see if you wanted to fill in the silence but you don’t,” he responded.

Meyers seemed amazed by this as well.

“Damn that was a Game of Thrones-style burn,” Meyers said. “‘I merely hoped you would fill the silence but you did not so I will: Take him away.’”

He went on to call the interview “so brutal I watched it through my fingers like a horror movie.”

Meyers added, “I think I heard her audibly gulp more than I heard her say actual words.”
