Apple TV's Slow Horses has been going strong since 2022, bringing new fame to its existing and breakout stars alike. Even amid his storied career, Gary Oldman has delivered a standout performance as Slough House's bedraggled leader. At the same time, Jack Lowden's work as River Cartwright has made the actor a top contender for a new iteration of James Bond.
The most recent installment of the show was full of surprises as Slow Horses season 6 saw some shakeups both in front of and behind the camera. Writer and executive producer Will Smith exited the show after leading its creative for its first five seasons. Meanwhile, season 6 also saw the return of one of Slow Horses' most mysterious characters, Olivia Cooke's Sid Baker.
Despite the changes, Slow Horses is still going strong. Though it was far from the first show to premiere on Apple TV, Slow Horses' breakneck production pace has put the series on track to become the streamer's longest show. The show's consistency has likely played an important role in maintaining its audience, but even more importantly, the show's quick turnaround time hasn't detracted from its quality.
The show is set to maintain its steady pace and compelling story following Slow Horses' climactic sixth season, as the show has already started making moves towards what comes next.
Slow Horses Is Renewed Through Season 8 On Apple TV
Before season 6 had even premiered, Slow Horses was renewed for both a seventh and eighth season. The show, which is based on Mick Herron's series of novels, has already adapted much of its source material and plans to follow suit in the coming seasons.
With the exception of season 6, every season of Slow Horses has adapted one of Herron's novels. Season 6 combined the stories from two books, Joe Country and Slough House, into one. The show has already confirmed that seasons 7 and 8 will focus on one book each, Bad Actors and Clown Town, respectively.
Both novels place First Desk Diana Taverner in the hot seat as she is forced to reconcile with the resurfacing of longstanding MI5 secrets and the consequences of her own underhanded dealings, like the ones revealed in Slow Horses season 6. Bad Actors also features the return of former First Desk Claude Whelan, and, of course, both stories center the necessary disruption caused by Slough House agents.
These are the last novels currently released in the main Slough House series, but Herron has confirmed that more books are coming, meaning that Slow Horses could press on even beyond season 8 without running out of source material.
Mick Herron has also written five Slough House novellas, and three standalone novels in the Slough House universe.
Slow Horses Season 8 Already Started Filming
The season 6 finale came out yesterday, and star Christopher Chung has already confirmed that not only has season 7 already finished filming, but production for Slow Horses season 8 is now underway. In an era where two- and even three-year gaps between seasons have become the norm, Slow Horses' production schedule proves that annual releases can still be achieved with time to spare.
This is even more impressive when considering that Clown Town, the novel being adapted in season 8, didn't come out until September 2025. This means that the TV series wasn't even able to begin working on the story until about a year ago, and in that time has now developed, wrote, cast, and shot it.
The show's life beyond season 8 is still up in the air, but if another renewal comes as quickly as this one did, the wait for Mick Herron's next novel may be the only thing slowing Slow Horses down.
Slow Horses' New Season 7 Casting Explained
In keeping with Bad Actors' story, James Callis will be reprising his role as Claude Whelan in the upcoming season. The novel also features some brand-new characters, meaning the cast of Slow Horses season 7 will see some new additions.
Ethan Moorhouse and Joshua McGuire, known for roles in The Gentlemen and MobLand, respectively, have joined the cast in unconfirmed roles. Additionally, they will be joined by TV veterans Varada Sethu, Tuppence Middleton, and Merab Ninidze.
With season 6 as well-received as every one that came before, and season 7 already in the can, Slow Horses is showing no sign of losing its streaming dominance any time soon.
