Other Mommy is making a killing at the box office.
2026's Other Mommy, which is an adaptation of the Josh Malerman novel Incidents Around the House, was written by Nathan Elston (Succession) and directed by Rob Savage (Host). The Blumhouse–Atomic Monster production stars Jessica Chastain in a dual role as loving mother Ursula and the entity taking on her form and tormenting her family. The movie, which debuted in theaters on October 9, stars Jay Duplass as Ursula's husband Russ, Arabella Olivia Clark as her daughter Bela, and Karen Allen as her mother Grandma Ruth Martin, opposite a supporting cast that includes Dichen Lachman, Sean Kaufman, and Arian Moayed.

Per Variety, as of Saturday morning, Other Mommy is projected to earn a 3-day total of $28 million at the domestic box office at the end of its weekend, which is more than enough for it to debut at No. 1 at the domestic box office. In addition to becoming the sixth horror or horror-adjacent movie to debut at No. 1 in 2026 (after Send Help, Scream 7, Backrooms, Scary Movie, and Resident Evil), it has broken the record for the best Blumhouse debut of 2026.
While Atomic Monster (which merged with Blumhouse in 2024) had a bigger debut with Backrooms ($81.4 million, which was also the best debut in history for fellow production company A24), every movie that Blumhouse itself had a direct hand in debuted below Other Mommy, including Obsession, the Curry Barker movie that is now the fifth highest-grossing horror movie of all time.
Below, see how the 2026 horror movie's debut compares with the rest of Blumhouse's output for the year:
|
Title |
Domestic Debut |
Worldwide Total |
|---|---|---|
|
Lee Cronin's The Mummy |
$13.5 million |
$90.5 million |
|
Obsession |
$17.2 million |
$522.2 million |
|
Insidious: Out of the Further |
$25.1 million |
$169.5 million |
|
The Uprising |
$3.3 million |
$8.1 million |
Because there are no more Blumhouse movies set to debut through the end of 2026 (their next theatrical feature will be River, due on January 15, 2027), Other Mommy will officially break the company's record for the year if its current projections hold through the end of Sunday.
However, there is very little likelihood that it will be able to have the kind of retention that allowed Obsession to become such a record-breaking smash. Obsession became the first movie since 1982's E.T. to earn more than the previous weekend for three consecutive weekends, which is an outcome that the new Blumhouse movie will be highly unlikely to earn, considering the fact that Other Mommy reviews have been overwhelmingly negative.
While Obsession earned a Certified Fresh score of 93% from critics on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer as well as a Verified Hot score of 94% from verified audience members on the Popcornmeter, Other Mommy has earned a dismal 19% on the Tomatometer and an underwhelming 46% on the Popcornmeter. It also earned a devastating CinemaScore of D+ (compared to Obsession's A-), so word of mouth is unlikely to build as its theatrical run continues.
However, not being able to live up to Obsession's haul does not mean that Other Mommy will be a failure. The movie reportedly only cost $19 million to make, which likely places its estimated break-even point somewhere around $48 million. Given its record-breaking debut, it should be able to clear that benchmark worldwide by the end of its run. Even if its trajectory crashes and burns like Blumhouse's Andrew Garfield historical action thriller The Uprising, it should be able to clear the $50 million milestone.
