These Durban suburbs could face reduced water flow following pipeline leak

Residents and businesses across parts of Durban’s central and southern areas are being warned of reduced water flow following the discovery of a leak on the Southern Aqueduct pipeline.

The eThekwini Municipality said on 27 August that the leak was detected along Perth Road in Dawncliffe, Westville, with technical teams currently carrying out the necessary repairs.

The reduction in water flow could affect reservoir levels and, in turn, water availability in several communities.

Reservoir outlets may be temporarily closed

The City said it will continue monitoring reservoir levels while repairs are underway.

Depending on water demand as well as the amount of water available in individual reservoirs, some reservoir outlets may be temporarily closed.

This is intended to preserve available water storage and reduce the amount of time needed for reservoirs to recover once normal water flow is restored.

Durban suburbs affected

The reduction in flow may affect a large number of communities across the Central Region, Southern Region as well as Pinetown South System.

Central Region

Affected areas include:

• Northdene, Farningham Ridge, Hillary, Malvern, Mount Vernon, Queensburgh, Queensmead Industrial and Shallcross
• Moseley Park, Nirvana Hills and Northdene
• Coedmore, Memorial Park, Umbilo, Umhlathuzana and Umkhumbaan
• Arena Park, Chatsworth, Crossmoor, Enhlanzeni, Ezinyathini, Klaarwater, Kwamgaga, Montford, Moorton, Risecliff, Silverglen, Welbedagt, Westcliff as well as Woodhurst
• Buffels Bosch, Burlington Heights, Savannah Park and Shallcross
• Bayview, Bulbul, Croftdene, Havenside, Kharwastan, Umhlathuzana as well as Woodlands
• Yellowwood Park

Southern Region

The disruption may also affect large parts of Umlazi, including sections A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y and Z.

Other affected areas include:

• Ensimbini, Ntabankulu, Draaihoek, Mahlabathini, Mangamazini as well as Mkhazini
• Folweni A, B and C
• Golokodo, Dodoza and Isiphingo Esincane

Pinetown South System

Areas supplied through the Pinetown South System that could be affected include Klaarwater, Phumphele, St Wendolins, parts of Nsizwakazi, Savannah Park, Wiltshire Factories, Regency Park, Latana, Hlanganisa as well as Gwala Road.

Other affected areas include Sarjoo Road, Intake Road, Luganda, parts of Nagina Township, Khoseleni, Sithundu Hills, Dambuza, Bell Tower Road, Grasmere Road and Mpongo Road.

The municipality has not indicated how long the reduced flow will continue, only saying its technical teams are attending to the leak and that reservoir levels will be monitored throughout the repair process.
