Supergirl already has enough power to make most DCU heroes look completely outmatched, but Kara Zor-El has barely started showing what she can do. Her strength, speed, flight, durability, and heat vision have all made their way onto the big screen, yet the way Kara uses those abilities is what makes her stand out from Superman. She does not fight like Clark, and she certainly does not carry herself like him.
That becomes clear almost immediately when she shows up in Superman, where Milly Alcock's Kara makes a brief but memorable appearance. She arrives with little interest in Clark's carefully constructed image of heroism, and Supergirl takes that much further. The movie gives Kara far more opportunities to use her powers, from throwing herself into fights across the galaxy to taking on Krem of the Yellow Hills and his forces. Her powers also come with an important limitation. Kara needs a yellow sun to access the full extent of her Kryptonian abilities, something the movie makes especially clear when she travels to worlds with different suns.
Kara has already demonstrated the core abilities fans expect from a Kryptonian. However, several famous Supergirl powers still have not appeared in the DCU, giving future movies plenty of room to expand her abilities without making her feel like a completely different character.
11 Superhuman Strength
Kara's strength is the easiest of her abilities to understand, because Supergirl rarely needs to make a big production out of it. During the bar sequence, she throws around much larger opponents with an almost casual attitude, while Ruthye gets a firsthand look at what a Kryptonian can do. Kara does not need a weapon or even much room to turn the situation in her favor.
Her strength also comes through in the way she handles physical obstacles. Objects that would require machinery or multiple people to move are barely an inconvenience for her. That makes her strength feel like a constant part of Kara's physicality rather than an ability she has to consciously activate.
10 Flight
Flight is the ability that most clearly separates Kara's adventure from the Earthbound stories of many DCU heroes. Supergirl takes her far beyond the atmosphere, allowing her to move between planets and navigate a story that spans the galaxy.
That scale gives flight a purpose beyond superhero spectacle. Kara can arrive somewhere without relying on a ship, leave a dangerous location almost instantly, and move through environments that would otherwise be completely inaccessible. The movie treats her ability to fly as a fundamental part of being Kryptonian, not a special trick reserved for major action sequences.
9 Superhuman Speed
Speed is less about what Kara can overpower and more about how little time she needs to act. When something happens during the movie, she can reach the scene almost immediately, covering distances that would leave a normal person with no chance of intervening.
That becomes very valuable when Supergirl is protecting Ruthye. A threat does not necessarily have to be standing directly in front of her for Kara to respond. Her speed gives her enough reach to move from one part of a situation to another before it gets out of control.
8 Superhuman Reflexes & Agility
Kara's reflexes show up in the smaller movements that would be easy to overlook besides her more spectacular abilities. She can catch or evade incoming attacks with extremely precise timing, and she is capable of reacting before an opponent has much opportunity to adjust.
Her agility becomes very apparent whenever she is airborne. Kara can change direction in the middle of a maneuver, turn quickly, and maintain control while moving at extraordinary speeds. Rather than making her another powerhouse who happens to fly, those movements give her a physical grace that is easy to miss when the movie is focused on how much damage Supergirl can do.
7 Superhuman Durability
Kara's durability gets one of its most constant displays in Superman, thanks to an unlikely opponent. Krypto repeatedly launches himself at her, knocking her around with enough force to send her flying. Kara can withstand the attacks without suffering the kind of injuries they would cause to an ordinary human.
Supergirl establishes the other side of that ability by showing what happens when Kara is deprived of yellow sunlight. Under a red sun, her Kryptonian powers disappear, leaving her considerably more vulnerable. That limitation keeps her durability from functioning as blanket invulnerability and ties it directly to the rules governing her powers.
6 Heat Vision
Heat vision gives Kara an entirely different option when she does not need to rely on physical force. Her red eye beams can reach an opponent from a distance, allowing her to attack without closing the gap between them.
The movie puts that to destructive use against the Brigands. Kara's heat vision is powerful enough to blast through the hull of a spaceship, turning what could have been a simple fight into a demonstration of just how dangerous her vision can be. It also gives her some precision that her other abilities lack. She can direct the beams toward a specific target instead of having to physically reach it first.
5 Freeze Breath (Missing)
Kara has already shown off the abilities most audiences immediately associate with Superman, but Supergirl leaves several familiar Kryptonian powers on the table. Some are abilities that fans have seen from other versions of Kara, while others could completely change what she is capable of doing in the DCU, one of which is her freeze breath ability. Superman has already demonstrated the power in the DCU, making its absence from Supergirl very noticeable. It would also give Kara a natural counterpart to her heat vision, expanding the Kryptonian arsenal without reinventing it.
4 Superhuman Hearing (Missing)
Kara has not yet been shown using superhuman hearing, another classic Kryptonian ability. The power could give her some Superman-style moments, particularly when locating people in danger from a distance. It would also be a useful addition outside of action scenes, giving Kara another way to perceive what is happening around her.
3 Telescopic And Microscopic Vision (Missing)
Kara's vision has already received attention in the DCU, but the more specialized forms of Kryptonian sight remain unexplored. Telescopic vision would let her see extraordinary distances, while microscopic vision would allow her to examine details invisible to humans. Both could expand her abilities without making her physically more powerful.
2 Accelerated Healing (Missing)
The DCU has established that yellow sunlight fuels Kara's powers, but it has not shown whether that energy also accelerates her healing. The comics have explored that ability, making it a possibility for a future movie. Her recovery could also weaken when she is deprived of yellow sunlight.
