Amazon Officially Finds Its Jack Ryan Replacement With Major New Adaptation

Amazon's Prime Video has its replacement for Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan all lined up. While this streaming platform has a number of big hits, Tom Clancy has been its most significant action-thriller franchise. The series, which stars John Krasinski as the titular character of Clancy's Ryanverse, ran for four seasons between 2018 and 2023 and has earned an overall critic score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. This success spawned a Jack Ryan movie in 2026, but it looks as if that will be the end of things for this specific iteration of the franchise.

The film Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War hasn't performed as well as its TV series predecessor, so it seems unlikely that further films with Krasinski in the role will keep the franchise alive moving forward. This means a more definitive end to Prime Video's Jack Ryan, leaving a void in the action-thriller realm. Thankfully, it hasn't taken long for Amazon to find the perfect project to fill that particular void. It was recently reported that MGM Studios is developing a TV adaptation of the upcoming novel by author Melinda Leigh, titled The Courier.

Leigh's The Courier novel won't be published until March of 2027, so we can't know all the details of the story just yet. However, the basic premise has already been revealed. The Courier will revolve around a diplomatic courier by the name of Daisy who survives a plane explosion that was meant specifically to kill her and cover up a stolen package. The trouble is that Daisy then finds herself framed for the crime and must embark on a high-stakes adventure through Europe to uncover the truth and set the record straight.

This information makes The Courier sound like a natural spiritual successor to Jack Ryan. There's that similar angle of a government worker being thrust into stakes far beyond their pay grade. A world of files and documents transforms into something deadly and mysterious, and the hope is that, as we get to know Daisy, we find a similar appeal to what we saw in Krasinsky's pencil-pushing analyst-turned-action-hero.

Higher or Lower

Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score.

We currently have no idea who might end up playing Daisy, nor are we certain what additional dynamics and characters will come into play here. What we do know is that Amazon's The Courier TV series is in the hands of creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer Martin Gero, known for NBC's Blindspot.

The Courier's Showrunner Has An Impressive Resume

Jamie Alexander in a still from Blindspot

The basic premise of The Courier certainly sounds exciting, but the TV series becomes all the more promising when considering Gero's background. This creator has quite the extensive resume. He's best known as the showrunner for the NBC crime drama Blindspot, which ran for five seasons. Before this, Gero created the COVID-19 lockdown-centered comedy TV series Connection, and, going back to 2012, the drama series The L.A. Complex, which holds a rare 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. There's little doubt that Gero knows how to get things done.

That's not all, of course. Gero's name is associated with a wide variety of projects, including the sci-fi spinoff series Stargate Atlantis, NBC's Quantum Leap, The Lovebirds, Bored to Death, Keep Breathing, and more. As with any creator, the performance of these projects varies. Not every one was a winner, but this length of experience suggests that Gero has learned plenty of the dos and don'ts of the industry. Jack Ryan is all wrapped up, but we have every reason to believe that Gero will ensure that The Courier stands as a suitable stand in.
